PeacePlayers International – South Africa (PPI-SA) started term 2 on a great note. Firstly, the Leadership and Development Program (LDP) Champions for Peace Boys Team took part in the Durban High School (DHS) 150th Basketball Festival where the participants worked diligently and showed great team work. Our PPI-SA team were the only non-profit organization that participated in the festival. The participants in this team were selected because they showed excellent leadership and team-oriented skills. The team was coached by our very own PPI-SA coaches Sfiso Mthembu, Yamkela Nako, Siyanda Nxumalo and managed by Noluthando Msweli.
This was a great opportunity for our boys to participate in a tournament of such a high caliber; they were playing against South Africa’s top private schools. The players were able to interact with schools from different communities as well play against South Africa’s no.1 Boys High School team – Durban High School (DHS). We would like to thank DHS for inviting us again this year, and hope to be a part of the festival again next year. Also, huge thank you to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and the US Embassy South Africa for funding our participation in the festival!

Secondly, this past week, PPI-SA held the Refresher training for orientation, facilitation and Life Skills Curriculum with the coaches for term 2. Led by our curriculum Coordinator, Ntobeko Ngcamu. The training ran for two days and covered the following items:
1. Term expectations
2. Basic Facilitation
3. Teachable moments using basketball to teach life skills
4. Life skills curriculum and M&E.

The term 2 life skill themes were also discussed but place more emphasis on week ones theme which is individual and team goals. Other themes that will be covered in term 2 are as follows:

Week 1: Individual and team goals
Week 2: Self & community Identity
Week 3: Responsibility within the team and community
Week 4: Self, Others & Community Respect
Week 5: Stereotypes & Prejudice
Week 6: Gender Stereotypes
Week 7: Understanding diversity
Week 8: Collaboration and Cooperation (Teamwork)
Week 9: Reflection week- end of term.

We are really excited for term 2, as our coaches have shown a great understanding of the curriculum and facilitation during the refresher training. Each week throughout the course of the term, coaches will explore and facilitate different themes, as shown above, whilst also developing their own facilitation and leadership skills. Term 2 has started on a great note!
